Explore the lava tube caves and historic sites, including the battlefields from the war between the Modoc people and the U.S. Army in the 1870s. FAQs

  • Do I need to take a guided tour of the caves?

While there are ranger-led tours, you don't need to take one. A majority of the caves are open for your self-guided adventure. The ones you cannot view on your own are off-limits to protect certain animal groups, such as roosting bats. The Visitor Center is the place to go to learn everything you need to know about the caves, including how hard or easy they are to navigate. You can also purchase protective hats and maps.
  • What are the hiking trails like?

Lava Beds National Monument offers a variety of mild and challenging hiking trails through stunning scenery. For a mellow hike, go with the one-mile Bunchgrass Trail along Crescent Butte. The Thomas-Wright Battlefield Trail is a little over a mile one way and features stellar seasonal wildflowers. Serious hikers will be drawn to the Missing Link Trail, a 10-mile loop that starts on the Bunchgrass Trail and finishes up on the Three Sisters Trail.
